This year at the 2010 ASID Design Summit at the Merchandise Mart, Harrington College of Design student, Sarah Washburn took home First Place (and a $1,000 scholarship) in the Richard A. Smith Memorial Scholarship competition!

The competition included a Project Overview and Client Profile with strict program, code and sustainability requirements.

The Project Overview was:
In a downtown office space, resides an administrative office for the ASID Illinois Chapter Office. The space functions to provide meeting space for its members and to provide working and meeting space for the Administrator.

Sarah’s approach to the project was to take the steps she typically takes with any design: she spent time in the space and took a lot of measurements of the existing furniture.  Her goal was to use all existing filing systems and furniture to highlight the credits that could be achieved in a hypothetical LEED certification process through reuse.

As Sarah said, “I decided to work on this competition while taking the Sustainable Design course and my inspiration came from Mies Van der Rohe’s furniture design.  I am very excited about winning this competition and I would like to extend my thanks to Harrington instructors Constantine Vasilios and Devan Castellano for their assistance and support through my process.”

Sarah’s presentation was outstanding in addressing all requirements… see some glimpses of the project below:

Congratulations on the Scholarship Sarah!
