When Samantha Ng studied at Harrington College in Chicago, she had no idea that her career would end up taking her back home to Hong Kong, to join one of the most prestigious interior design firms in Asia.

After receiving her Bachelors of Interior Architecture (BIA) from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Samantha decided to enter the Interior Design Master’s program at Harrington. She shared, “I decided to pursue a master’s degree because learning is a never-ending process, there will always be a new trend in design; it is the matter of learning and applying these techniques, which I have learned very well at Harrington.”

After graduating from Masters of Interior Design (MID) with higher honors from Harrington, Samantha returned to Hong Kong. Recently, she became employed as an Interior Designer within the hotel sector by Aedas, one of the largest architectural practices in Hong Kong. In addition to architecture, the Aedas global network provides consultancy services in interior design, master-planning, landscape and urban design throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.

Samantha said, “As an interior designer, my vision is to create environments and inviting spaces to enhance ones experience through design and my mission is to help lead the world towards sustainability.”

Congratulations Samantha – we hope to get an update from you sometime soon!

When IIDA Illinois reached out to its members with a competition to design its new logo, Harrington Alumna, Mindy Zimmer submitted the original logo above for consideration.

“My thought process was to create a simple design that updated the current IIDA Illinois logo and also gave a distinct identity to the IIDA Illinois Chapter. I wanted something that could be used as a graphic on all of the IIDA Illinois Chapter marketing materials, flyers, website, etc.

The concept was a simple line drawing outlining part of the Chicago skyline and then receding down into a horizontal line. To me this graphic represented the idea of Chicago and its great architecture, being the iconic city center, and the flat area abstractly represented downstate Illinois as it recedes into the plains.

The way I chose to illustrate the line reminded me of a simple line drawing or a sketch, which is ultimately how all great architecture and interior design ideas begin, as simple line drawings,” Mindy stated.

Mindy’s design was chosen as a finalist, along designs from Elaine Decho-Fishman and Samantha Ng. When the vote was tallied, Mindy’s was announced the winner of the competition, making her design concept the official logo of IIDA Illinois and also the winner of an Eames Molded Plastic Armchair with Eifel Tower base courtesy of Interior Investments.

Once the voting concluded, the Board worked with Mindy to refine the logo into the final graphic you can see below, which showcases the iconic Willis (Sears) Tower and the historic Illinois Capitol building.

Congrats to Mindy Zimmer on your winning design!
