When I attended the 4th Digital Photography Student/Faculty show  I came across this photo below, and followed up with Harrington College of Design Digital Photography Instructor, Tim Arroyo, to find out more about his photo and the project. Read below!

When I was a teen back in the 80’s, my sister had a collection of porcelain masks hanging on her wall. The masks were full faces, which had painted or airbrushed make-up, feathers, and various adornments. I loved those masks, and they served as part of the inspiration for this project. My initial concept when making this project was to create an entire wall of these masks of various styles and colors of make-up. I have shot four, but have only prepared two.

The most challenging aspect of the project is finding a make-up artist to take the time to work on it, and find one that is willing to do it for free, as the make-up application is a very tedious process. I was fortunate enough to meet Christine James, a recent Harrington Grad at an on-campus event. She introduced herself to me after the session to discuss portfolios, but our discussion soon led to her previous employment as a make-up artist.

We started to work together immediately. Christine brought in one of her friends to model for the shoot. Another Harrington student Felicia Brockunier. Felicia was perfect for the job, she is a very beautiful young lady, and that beauty shows through in the final products.

In January I submitted one of the two photos into the “Fresh Faces” annual contest sponsored by Rangefinder Magazine. The photo was selected as one of the top 20 finalists, but then the ultimate decision was passed on to the general public to vote for the winner. Sad to say that it didn’t win, however, in a regular juried contest, I’m sure it would have done extremely well.

The photo is on my Arroyo Photography & Imaging Facebook page, and soon on my website; timarroyo.com.
