The Eating & Seating Challenge is a dynamic annual competition in which Harrington College of Design Interior Design students are challenged to rethink and reinvent the furniture we use every day. After defining current seating and dining trends, each contestant designs a solution in response to the new trends.

The Eating & Seating Challenge showcases just one more way that our interior design students are able to design from the top down – check out some of the innovative designs that came out of the competition below!

Bentwood Ottoman by Cameron Wudtke
An excerpt from Cameron’s project illustrates how his design seeks to rethink furniture design:This solution illustrates the many ways the bentwood ottoman can be used as an eating surface. It is thin enough to fit between the seams of each modular unit. The modular cushions can be placed in many configurations within the frame, adapting to the needs of busy college students. When eating, college students are typically studying, watching TV, or on their computers.”

The Harrington College of Design booth at NeoCon 2010 had a stunning design that attracted many visitors, including Merchandise Mart President, Chris Kennedy.  The booth was designed entirely by Harrington students (see below for names!) in the ELE319 Exhibit Design class led by Communication Design Chair and instructor Brad Kisner, and Interior Design Chair and instructor John Martin-Rutherford this past Spring.

Check out a short film of the booth created by Harrington’s Digital Photography Chair and instructor Dirk Fletcher, who shot the video with Canon’s 14mm, 24mm–70mm and 100-400mm L lenses along with the Zeiss 25mm.
